2013 Mayor's Spring Cleanup

GGCA President Johnson, Mayor Rawlings-Blake, Councilman Stokes planting a shrub

Greater Greenmount Community Association was honored to have been chosen by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to host the Kick Off event for the 2013 Spring Cleanup. The theme for this 14th annual spring cleanup was “Spring into Action” and the mayor encouraged residents to make this the most successful cleanup ever.

On Saturday April 20th from 8:00 – 8:30 am Mayor Rawlings-Blake, Department of Public Works Director Alfred H. Foxx and Councilman Carl Stokes, joined by members of their staff, were at our community garden at the intersection of Homewood Avenue and East North Avenue. After speaking, Mayor Rawlings-Blake and Councilman Stokes joined with GGCA President Linda Johnson to plant a Chionanthus virginicus, a native deciduous shrub. Come back next spring when it should have branched clusters of pure white flowers and you will understand why the plant has the common name of Old Man’s Beard.

After the Mayor left to visit other neighborhoods, residents and other volunteers continued to cleanup this and other gardens throughout the GGCA community.

Thanks to everyone who made the day a success.
