National Night Out – 2011

On Tuesday August 2, 2011 the Greater Greenmount Community Association, with the support of the Eastern District Police Department, sponsored a National Night Out event in East Baltimore/Midway. The residents in the 900 block of Bonaparte Ave. coordinated the event, grilled the hamburgers and hot dogs, served drinks and welcomed residents from other parts of the community.

The MTA set up tables to provide residents with information about their plans to modernize the Kirk Ave Bus Depot and had one of the new hybrid buses on display which residents could go through.

In addition to residents attending the event we also had members of the Eastern District Police Department, the Baltimore Police Explorer’s Program, politicians and those running for political office.

A highlight of the evening was a performance by the Baltimore Show Stoppers Marching Band. The band practices at the Cecil Kirk Rec Center and residents often hear them practicing in the evening. It was wonderful to see the results of all of their hard work.

Mayor’s (delayed) 2011 Spring Clean-up

On Saturday April 30, 2011 the New Greenmount West Community Association (NGWCA), Greater Baltimore AHC (GBAHC), with assistance from Central Baltimore Partnership (CBP), held a joint Spring Cleanup. It had been delayed from Saturday April 16th due to the forecast for severe thunderstorms. NGWCA is the community association for Greenmount West; GBAHC is a non-profit with rental properties in Greenmount West and Barclay; CBP is a non-profit that works in the Greenmount West, Barclay and Charles North neighborhoods.

Volunteers started to gathered at 9:00 AM at the corner of Barclay and Lanvale Sts. to sign-up, get T-shirts, get assignments, unload supplies, and pick up bags, tools, gloves, and equipment. They then disbursed throughout Greenmount West and Barclay to cut grass, rake, sweep, pick up trash and generally spiff things up. At noon everyone returned with bags of trash and hearty appetites. The bags were assembled for later pick up by the Baltimore City Department of Sanitation and the appetites were satisfied with hot dogs and a salad.

Thanks to everyone who made the event possible.

However, we will be requesting a roll-off as part of the allocation we can get from the City for Neighborhood Clean-ups. Location and date will be announced once the plans are finalized.

We submitted the application to Mr. Scott from the Traffic Division on March 15th and Mr. Scott responded that the study will be completed by May 15th. If the traffic study determines that angle parking is feasible the next step will be to survey residents of each block to find out if they support the change.

Other areas of concern will be addressed in the future.

Dunk Your Junk

On Friday February 25, 2011 the Baltimore City Department of Public Works delivered a roll-off to the 2100 block of Homewood Ave. This was provided by the City as part of their program to encourage residents to clean up the neighborhood, the alleys and their basements.

The plan was for a community clean-up on Saturday. However, shortly after the roll-off was delivered some renovators from outside the neighborhood started filling it with their construction material. Neighbors informed them that the roll-off was for a community clean-up, asked them to leave (which they did) and then neighbors proceeded to fill the dumpster. It was filled to capacity by Friday evening.

Community Garden Planning

A bitterly cold and windy January afternoon is not the time to be planting a community garden. But is the time to be planning a community garden. Two vacant lots in the 2100 block of Boone St. are desolate now but in the spring the bales of hay and the pile of leaves that were delivered to the site during the fall will be tilled in to the soil to prepare it for a vegetable garden. Community President Ms. Sandra Coles discuss the plans with Ms. Cheryl Carmona and Ms. Aliza Sollins for a community garden to start later in the year.
