April 2, 2009
To our friends and neighbors:
As many of you know, one of our neighbors -- Veronica Williams
-- was cruelly taken from us very recently. On November 17th, 2008
Veronica was attacked in broad daylight on the corner of North Avenue
and Harford Road. She died from her injuries. Her husband, Cleaven "CJ"
Williams, is presently awaiting trial for her murder. His trial, originally scheduled to start on April 21st, 2009, has now been postponed to July 7, 2009. CJ was the president of the Greater
Greenmount Community Association.
With the trial date nearing, many in our community have
expressed anger at the community association because of its prior
association with CJ. Some have called for the community association to
take down any photos in which CJ is present. Others believe that the
community association in some way condones Veronica's murder.
We in the community association are united in grief over
Veronica's untimely death. Baltimore in general, and the Greater
Greenmount community in particular, need all the strong, caring mothers
we can find. Her death cheats her three young children of their mother,
and takes from our community one of its treasures. Veronica was a young
woman at the beginning of her adult life, with promise and a bright
future. We are struck by the senseless nature of her death, and by the
hole it creates in each of our daily lives. We emphatically mourn
Veronica's passing. We in no way condone her murder.
At its core, the purpose of the Greater Greenmount Community
Association is to bring neighbors together to improve our common
circumstance. We do that through organizing to reduce violence on our
streets, to deter criminal conduct, to beautify our neighborhoods, and
to invite new people into our community. In the past few years, we have
made significant progress in that direction. When we have moved ahead,
it has been because of the work of members of our community, all of
whom share our common goals of a better Greater Greenmount. Removing
any of the photos showing their accomplishments solely because CJ is
also present would do a disservice to them. It would make the
conversation only about CJ, rather than about the work of those other
persons, and about our community's efforts to improve.
With your help, we will continue the work of making a better Greater Greenmount. Thank you.
